Hurricane Beryl killed two persons in Jamaica as it made landfall on Wednesday, a police force spokeswoman said Thursday.
Head of Corporate Communications at the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), Stephanie Lindsay told Caribbean News Desk that a 26-year old man and a 26-year old woman were killed in separate incidents on different parts of the island.
She said the man, who was part of a group, who were playing a ball game in Western Kingston, was “swept away by flood waters”. Ms Lindsay said police were trying to confirm reports that a body was sighted.
The JCF spokeswoman said a woman was in a yard in Hanover when a tree fell and killed her.
She said the state-owned refinery, Petrojam, which is located in Kingston, was not affected by the storm.
Worst affected by Hurricane Beryl were Clarendon, St Elizabeth, Manchester and a number of other areas in western Jamaica. Overall, she said, “I think we were spared again.”
Already , the storm has flattened Carriacou and Petit Martinique, which are dependencies of Grenada, and Union Island, which is part of St Vincent and the Grenadines. One person was killed in Grenada, one on Carriacou and one on Bequia, another of the Grenadines.
